Unfortunately the chemicals used to maintain metal surfaces are a successful attempt to rapidly destroy iron, brass, stainless steel, chrome and virtually every single surface on board the ship. There are both direct and indirect causes to this problem.

Maintenance related causes

  • Use of polishes with ammonia or acid
  • Physical destruction of surface by using metal wools, aggressive compounds, etc.
  • Acid based rust removers (almost all are based on an acid)
  • Peroxide based disinfectants and sanitizers
  • Shining and metal cleaning material with component that create reactions with other chemicals on board
  • Degreaser, All Purpose Cleaners, boat soaps, floor cleaners containing solvents, petroleum distillate
  • Cleaners containing citrus oil (d-Limonene is an organic solvent)
  • All cleaners containing alcohol (alcohol is acidic in nature)
  • Use of 2 step teak cleaners such as Snappy Teak or Teak Plus and Minus

Not maintenance related causes

  • Humidity
  • Salt water
  • Active minerals and compounds in marine environment
  • Acid fall from exhaust system (Sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc.)
  • Chlorine from the pool (if pool is available)
  • Accelerated corrosion due to heat
  • Quality of the surface material

Let us present you with a realistic example:

Maintenance action

  • The crew uses Brasso, Flitz or equal metal polish on railings, elevators, and other steel surfaces
  • Another crew have to disinfect the ship daily, using alcohol, peroxide, phenol base disinfectant
  • Cleaning crew uses boat soap, all purpose cleaner, degreaser, etc. containing alcohol, solvents, d-Limonene etc.
  • Due to occurrence of rust and corrosion, now it is time to use rust removers with i.e. phosphoric acid
  • Teak decking needs to be cleaned and Snappy teak or something else is used
  • Now its time for disinfection again, and more peroxide or alcohol is added on top of the previously applied chemical
  • The ship gets washed with a boat soap containing one or several of the above components

Result as a reaction

  • These polishes contain ammonia. Ammonia is a base, it can act as an acid in marine environment!
  • Alcohol is an acid in nature. Peroxide accelerates rust specially when in contact with acids.
  • Alcohol, solvents, d-Lemonene or "natural citrus oil" are all damaging on metal surfaces and accelerates corrosion in combination with other chemicals
  • It is ACID. Off course It removes the rust, but it also corrodes the metal even more.
  • More ACID!!! More corrosive chemicals. There should be corrosive warning on the container!
  • Peroxide in combination with acid causes metal to corrode within seconds. You can observe it at home. (Test instructions)*
  • More water combined with solvents, alcohol, thickeners, etc...The result is more corrosion

All the above chemicals cause irreparable damage on painted surfaces, drainage, tanks and many other areas.

This destructive circle continues every day, several times a day.... We could add even more into this mountain of corrosion accelerators. The only happy entities are your cleaning chemical vendors and ship yards. Looking at the above maintenance flow, makes it unnecessary to even mention the negative impact of the process on safety, environmental and aquatic areas. Merely enormous financial loss should force anyone to take action despite environmental, safety and regulatory issues.

To perform this test you need to have Hydrochloric, Muriatic or phosphoric acid (can be purchased in any pool store), Hydrogen peroxide (available at all pharmacies and many department stores, a small sheet of metal (available at many building material stores)
Use gloves, protective mask and proper clothing. You are working with very corrosive and dangerous acids
Clean the surface of the metal sheet with acid. Thereafter wipe the surface with hydrogen peroxide
Notice how fast the surface of the metal changes color to orange. You are observing extremely accelerated rusting process.
