DITEC Marine

This is probably the greatest maintenance issue for large vessels. Unlike glass surfaces, the metal surfaces are not only covering a much larger area but also different kind of metal require different kind of maintenance. Iron rusts, stainless steel corrodes and rust, brass and bronze oxidizes with accelerated rate due to humidity and more.

Client objectives

The purpose of metal maintenance:

  • Preventing metal surfaces from corrosion, rust and deterioration
  • Maintaining metal surfaces to better SOA (Ship Overall Appearance)
  • Reducing repainting, repairs and costly replacements

Ship Maintenance or Financial Suicide?

Unfortunately the chemicals used to maintain metal surfaces are a successful attempt to rapidly destroy iron, brass, stainless steel, chrome and virtually every single surface on board the ship. In some cases the maintenance process becomes a financial, operational, safety and environmental suicide attempt.

  • Investment in ship

  • Investment in maintenance
  • Accelerated corrosion
  • More maintenance cost
  • Repairs
  • Replacements
  • Service & dry dock
  • More Maintenance...

There are both direct and indirect causes to this problem.

Maintenance related causes

  • Use of polishes with ammonia or acid
  • Physical destruction of surface by using metal wools, aggressive compounds, etc.
  • Acid based rust removers (almost all are based on an acid)
  • Peroxide based disinfectants and sanitizers
  • Shining and metal cleaning material with component that create reactions with other chemicals on board
  • Degreaser, All Purpose Cleaners, boat soaps, floor cleaners containing solvents, petroleum distillate
  • Cleaners containing citrus oil (d-Limonene is an organic solvent)
  • All cleaners containing alcohol (alcohol is acidic in nature)
  • Use of 2 step teak cleaners such as Snappy Teak or Teak Plus and Minus

Not maintenance related causes

  • Humidity
  • Salt water
  • Active minerals and compounds in marine environment
  • Acid fall from exhaust system (Sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, etc.)
  • Chlorine from the pool (if pool is available)
  • Accelerated corrosion due to heat
  • Quality of the surface material

Let us present you with a realistic example:

Maintenance action

  • The crew uses Brasso, Flitz or equal metal polish on railings, elevators, and other steel surfaces
  • Another crew have to disinfect the ship daily, using alcohol, peroxide, phenol base disinfectant
  • Cleaning crew uses boat soap, all purpose cleaner, degreaser, etc. containing alcohol, solvents, d-Limonene etc.
  • Due to occurrence of rust and corrosion, now it is time to use rust removers with i.e. phosphoric acid
  • Teak decking needs to be cleaned and Snappy teak or something else is used
  • Now its time for disinfection again, and more peroxide or alcohol is added on top of the previously applied chemical
  • The ship gets washed with a boat soap containing one or several of the above components

Result as a reaction

  • These polishes contain ammonia. Ammonia is a base, it can act as an acid in marine environment!
  • Alcohol is an acid in nature. Peroxide accelerates rust specially when in contact with acids.
  • Alcohol, solvents, d-Lemonene or "natural citrus oil" are all damaging on metal surfaces and accelerates corrosion in combination with other chemicals
  • It is ACID. Off course It removes the rust, but it also corrodes the metal even more.
  • More ACID!!! More corrosive chemicals. There should be corrosive warning on the container!
  • Peroxide in combination with acid causes metal to corrode within seconds. You can observe it at home. (Test instructions)*
  • More water combined with solvents, alcohol, thickeners, etc...The result is more corrosion

All the above chemicals cause irreparable damage on painted surfaces, drainage, tanks and many other areas.

This destructive circle continues every day, several times a day.... We could add even more into this mountain of corrosion accelerators. The only happy entities are your cleaning chemical vendors and ship yards. Looking at the above maintenance flow, makes it unnecessary to even mention the negative impact of the process on safety, environmental and aquatic areas. Merely enormous financial loss should force anyone to take action despite environmental, safety and regulatory issues.

DITEC Solution for Metal maintenance

DITEC product line for metal maintenance and protection includes:

  • Preservation coatings
  • Preventive and protective maintenance and cleaning products

Products for Metal & General maintenance

Metal Maintenance

Maintenance

We use a different engineering and technology to formulate our products. SAM™ technology , AR technology and ELST technology are all developed to ensure a better performance and efficiency without compromising safety and environment. The "performance" includes and requires surface protection.

Marketing an effective cleaner that corrodes the surface, is providing customers with a high performance corrosion catalyst, not a cleaner.

There are two main factors besides the superior technology that makes our products better than other alternatives.

1. Our products, do not contain acids, alcohol, ammonia, solvents, d-Lemonene, formaldehyde, phenols, chlorine, etc. to accelerate corrosion

2. Our cleaning products such as Degreaser, APC, Boat soap include anti-corrosion inhibitors, and our polishes such as Metalon PX not only lacks ammonia and other corrosive or potentially corrosive chemicals, but also uses SAM™ technology to protect the surface after application.

Benefits

Performance and synergy

Resolving the destructive chain of chemical application should be considered the greatest benefit with DITEC product lines. Nevertheless, the following are a few advantages with DITEC line:

  • Protects surfaces from accelerated corrosion in marine environment
  • Remarkably improve longevity of metal surface
  • Makes it easier to maintain the surfaces with cleaner result
  • Use fewer chemicals with reduced cost
  • Streak, smear free profile
  • Easy to rinse, requires less water (an energy and fuel saving factor for shipping industry)
  • Better SOA
  • Higher profitability for shipping companies and better distribution and usage of budget for Navy, armed forces or Cost Guard.
  • Regulatory compliance
  • Good publicity
  • Safe for personnel

Unmatched Financial Advantage

What is the value of increasing the dry dock intervals with 1 year? or reduce the dry dock time with only 1 day?

By using appropriate chemicals designed and developed for the task you will be able to:

  • Reduce chemical cost
  • Reduce inventory and foot print
  • Reduce
  • transportation costs
  • Reduce management and inventory cost
  • Significantly reduce repairs and replacements
  • Show better SOA
  • Significantly reduce financial and legal liabilities

Metalon PX application onboard Oasis of the Seas

Metalon Preservation

Preservation of Stainless steel structures on board cruise ship

Metalon application on board Oasis of the Seas

Metalon PX application

Metalon PX reduces the polishing labor with 97% and cost of polish with 50%

Metalon PX reduced polishing on cruise ship from once every day to once every 14 days. Compared with Brasso at a retail price of $3.75, Metalon PX is almost 50% cheaper.

Metalon brings a completely different level of saving into the picture.

Liberty of the Seas reduced material consumption from 108 Liters/year to 6 Liters/year combined with a reduction of man-hours from whooping 3816 hours to 318 hours/year, when they preserved the surfaces with Metalon. To put this is perspective if one person was doing the job Metalon enabled him to accomplish his task in 2 months instead of 2 years.

Every single product from DITEC will perform in the same manner with direct cost saving effects and 10-50 times in savings for repairs, man power, replacement, administration, etc.

1
To perform this test you need to have Hydrochloric, Muriatic or phosphoric acid (can be purchased in any pool store), Hydrogen peroxide (available at all pharmacies and many department stores, a small sheet of metal (available at many building material stores)
2
Use gloves, protective mask and proper clothing. You are working with very corrosive and dangerous acids
3
Clean the surface of the metal sheet with acid. Thereafter wipe the surface with hydrogen peroxide
4
Notice how fast the surface of the metal changes color to orange. You are observing extremely accelerated rusting process.
