Hydrophobic glass is only part of the protection.

What is glass protection?

"Glass protection" is commonly understood as creation of hydrophobic properties on the glass surface in order to make the surface water-repellent. This is, however, not entirely correct. While creating a hydrophobic surface is can be an important part of glass protection, there is much more into it. The longevity of the coating and the strength of the protective layer are crucial factors for protection. A glass treatment that needs to be reapplied every one to two weeks (i.e. RainX) lacks not only the protection component, but is combined with a great cost (over US$3 sqm/year). Preservation of glass surface has the following objectives:

  • protecting glass surface from deposition of salt, calcium and mineral
  • preventing deterioration of the surface
  • creating a hydrophobic surface to prevent water-spots
  • reduction of maintenance and better appearance

There are several ways to create a hydrophobic or water-repellent surface. Simply any fatty/oily material will be water-repellent. We could simply use wax or oil on the glass and create the desired effect. The result wouldn't be satisfactory since these material create smear on the glass and alter the visibility. Therefore using oily product is not a functional solution.

There are many other commercially available chemicals for creation of water-repellency and many claim to protect the glass as well. Unfortunately, they offer only one function; creation of short-lasting water repelling properties without the protective component. The result is a failing coating, higher cost of material and more application work.


Glasstec S™ is a glass treatment application that creates a hydrophobic and protective surface on the glass. The hydrophobic surface is a result of increasing the contact angle between the hydrophobic effect on a water dropwater drops and glass surface (Lotus effect). Unlike other products on the market Glasstec creates protection by providing a molecular binding with the glass. The hydrophobic property of  Glasstec in combination with its protective function, prevents penetration of salt deposits and other contaminants. The glass surface will stay protected over longer period of time eliminating additional polishing in order to remove water spots, salt and calcium deposits. A Glasstec treated surface is easier to clean.

hydrophobic-conesGlasstec S contains specially engineered molecular components, SAM® (Smart Assembling Molecules). These molecules bind to the glass surface and create a protective layer on the glass. On the surface of this protective barrier it creates microscopic cones providing the glass with hydrophobic properties.

Despite the hydrophobic properties, a water drop must move away from the surface. Since the water drop is attracted to the surface due to it's surface tension, it moves away from the surface by gravitational force or application of other forces such as wind. However, as long as the applied force is not greater than the attraction between the water drop and the surface, water will stay on the surface and evaporates, leaving the mineral residues on the surface and creates water spots. This is what Glasstec is made to protect. These minerals and contaminants must be prevented from penetrating the glass, otherwise there is no protection. Additionally Glasstec is made to last up to 5 years on a glass surface. This is an exceptional and unmatched performance world record. The longevity is a result of SAM Technology.
